Memorial Day Parade
Andover enjoyed a proud day on May 29, 2006 for our annual Memorial Day parade and services.
Step-off was sharply at 8:45 a.m. at the Andover Elementary School. John Phelps, a WWII era veteran, led the way as honorary Parade Marshall. The Fire Department marched as our Color Guard and some rode the town's fire equipment. The RHAM High School, Middle School and Andover Elementary School bands marched in glory to patriotic songs. Spectators remarked that the music exceeded all expectations.
The Andover Little League, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies added color to our procession. The senior citizen float carried a representation of Betsy Ross and the original 13 star flag. The float was towed by Eric Siismets on his tractor a tribute to our town's agricultural history. Dignitaries from past and present rode in convertibles. Veterans and those on active duty marched or rode in antique cars and motorcycles to honor those that gave their lives for our country.
Andover residents and guests were on the parade route. The Andover Fire Department displayed 24 parade route flags. A thunderous fly-over by the 103rd Fighter Wing of the Connecticut Air National Guard recognized our parade.
The crowd grew more solemn at the Memorial site on the corners of Route 6 and 316. A wreath was placed on the site by Alyssa Hanson, Brownie and Garrett Stein, Cub Scout. Richard Swartwouth, dressed in his 6th Connecticut reinactment uniform, fired his powder rifle to honor our fallen Andover citizens. Taps and Echo were played by the RHAM band.
The procession continued up to Center Cemetary. John McCall, Master of Cermonies, began the observance with "General Order Number One". "The Gettysburg Address' was said by Marissa St. Louis. "In Flanders Field" was recited by Kaitlin Martin. Scott Lindley led "America the Beautiful" and he sang "Make Them Hear You". A silent awe applauded his incredible voice.
David Griffin, AES Principle, spoke and reminded us what Memorial Day means, less we forget the reason we celebrate this glorious, meaningful day. Robert Wanagel remembered the recently deceased Andover veterans while George Kitchin recognized veterans and those on active duty. A brief Memorial service was held at Townsend Cemetary.
A community cook-out was enjoyed by over 200 at the town gazebo. Steve Reade, Chairman of the Board of Finance, coordinated the reception. Ted's IGA supermarket in Hebron donated all the food including hot dogs, hamburgers, rolls, beverages, salads, and condiments, as well as, the paper products, charcoal and lighter fluid. THANK YOU TED'S!
The Memorial Day celebration was a wonderful tribute to our great town of Andover!
